Governance Arrangements
Who We Are
We are people who want to make a positive contribution to the education of children at Temple Herdewyke School. Governors are one of the largest volunteer forces in the country and have an important part to play in raising school standards. The role of the governing body is absolutely key to the effectiveness of a school.
To reflect the Trust arrangement that David Hibbert acts as Executive Head for Byfield and Temple Herdewyke schools, the governing body of both had been combined with a structure established to reflect local context.
What We Do
School governors provide strategic leadership and accountability in schools. Governors appoint the head teacher as part of the appointment group that includes the CEO and other Trust staff and is reflected in the Trusts Scheme of Delegation.
Each individual governor is a member of a governing board, which is established in law as a corporate body. Individual governors may not act independently of the rest of the governing board; decisions are the joint responsibility of the governing board.
The role of the governing board is a strategic one, its key functions are to:
- Set the aims and objectives for the school
- Agree the policies for achieving those aims and objectives that are not Trust policies
- Set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives through the School Development Plan (sometimes referred to as the School Improvement Plan)
- Monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
- Be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher
The headteacher is responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school and the implementation of the strategic framework established by the Trust and Governing Body
The Full Governing Body meets four times a year, with other groups meeting to consider key aspects of the school including but not limited to education and community.
The minutes of governors' meetings are available upon request which can be made to peter.robinson@stowevalley.com Head of Governance Stowe Valley MAT.

As a school we recognise that a diversity of thought, voices and perspectives is essential to good governance and the effective running of any organisation. We regularly collect diversity information from our governors and, depending on current data, can use this to:
- target recruitment to address gaps in experience and diversity
- develop and adapt board practices to ensure full participation
- prioritise training and awareness-raising in identified areas
- address potential ‘blind spots’ through seeking wider advice and perspectives on current and upcoming opportunities, challenges and risks
However, we are unable to publish this information as it would mean that individual members of our governing body are identifiable.
